1. Resting Heart Rate ❤️
- Sit quietly for about 5 minutes.
- Check your pulse for 60 seconds.
- A lower resting heart rate can often indicate better cardiovascular fitness, although many factors affect it.
- Stress, caffeine, medicines, illness and fitness level can all change your heart rate.
2. Step Test 🫀
- Step up and down on a stable step at a comfortable, consistent pace for a few minutes.
- Stop if you feel dizzy, unusually breathless or develop chest pain.
- Notice how quickly your breathing and heart rate recover after stopping.
- Faster recovery generally suggests better cardiovascular fitness, but this isn’t a medical diagnosis.
3. Walking Test 🚶
A simple brisk-walking test can help assess endurance.
- Walk at a brisk pace for a set period, such as 6 minutes.
- Notice how far you can comfortably walk and how breathless you become.
- Compare your results over time rather than with someone else’s.
4. Sit-to-Stand Test 💪
- Sit on a sturdy chair.
- Stand up and sit back down repeatedly for about 30 seconds.
- Count how many controlled repetitions you can complete.
- This gives an indication of leg strength, endurance and functional fitness.
5. Plank Test
- Hold a plank position while maintaining good form.
- Stop when you can no longer maintain the position safely.
- It provides a rough indication of core and muscular endurance.
6. Flexibility Test 🤸
For example, a simple sit-and-reach test can give an idea of flexibility in the lower back and hamstrings.
- Sit with your legs extended.
- Slowly reach toward your toes without bouncing.
- Don’t force the movement or push through pain.
7. What These Tests Can—and Can’t—Tell You
These home tests are useful for general fitness tracking, especially if you repeat them under similar conditions every few weeks. However, they cannot diagnose heart or lung disease or replace a professional fitness assessment or medical examination.
Important: Stop exercising immediately if you experience chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, unusual dizziness or a racing/irregular heartbeat, and seek appropriate medical care.
