Chest Pain at Night? Don’t Mistake It for Gas! Know These 7 Major Causes

Chest pain at night can be caused by gas, acidity or muscle strain, but sometimes it may signal a serious health problem, including a heart attack. Ignoring the pain or assuming it is caused by indigestion can delay essential treatment. Knowing the possible causes and recognising warning signs can help you take the right action at the right time.

1. Heart Attack

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle becomes blocked. Symptoms may include chest pressure, tightness, sweating, nausea and breathlessness. Pain can also spread to the arms, back, neck or jaw. It can occur even while resting or sleeping. Seek emergency medical help if a heart attack is suspected.

2. Gas, Acidity and Acid Reflux

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid moves back into the food pipe, causing a burning sensation in the chest, a sour taste or discomfort after meals. Symptoms may worsen when lying down, especially after eating late at night. However, heart-related pain can feel similar, so do not automatically assume chest pain is caused by gas.

3. Angina

Angina develops when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood. It can cause pressure, heaviness or tightness in the chest. Some types can occur at rest or during the night. New, worsening or persistent chest discomfort needs urgent medical evaluation.

4. Muscle Strain

Strain or inflammation affecting the chest muscles and ribs can cause pain that becomes worse with movement, deep breathing or pressing on the affected area. Although muscle-related pain is common, these symptoms alone cannot completely rule out a heart problem.

5. Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Anxiety and panic attacks can cause chest tightness, a racing heartbeat, sweating, dizziness and difficulty breathing. These symptoms may occur suddenly at night. However, new or unexplained chest pain should be medically assessed before attributing it to anxiety.

6. Lung Problems

Certain lung conditions, including pneumonia, inflammation around the lungs and pulmonary embolism, can cause chest pain. Sudden chest pain accompanied by breathlessness, fainting or coughing up blood requires immediate emergency care.

7. Pericarditis

Pericarditis is inflammation of the protective sac surrounding the heart. It can cause sharp chest pain that worsens when lying down or breathing deeply and may improve when sitting up and leaning forward. A doctor can determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

How Can You Recognise a Medical Emergency?

Do not ignore chest pain accompanied by:

  • Pressure or tightness spreading to the arm, jaw, shoulder or back.
  • Sudden breathlessness, cold sweating or nausea.
  • Fainting, severe dizziness or unusual weakness.
  • Severe, persistent or unexplained discomfort.

Important: If you suspect a heart attack, call emergency services immediately (112 in India). Do not wait until morning or attempt to treat the pain as gas at home.

Conclusion

Chest pain at night should never be dismissed without considering its possible cause. While acidity and muscle strain can cause discomfort, heart and lung conditions may also produce similar symptoms. Early medical assessment can help identify serious problems and prevent dangerous delays in treatment.
