Are you eating a lot of amla this winter? Be careful! These 8 people should avoid or strictly limit it

Amla (Indian gooseberry) is a winter superfood, but “more” is not always “better.” For some people, frequent or excessive intake can backfire. If you fall into any of the categories below, it’s best to be cautious—or avoid it altogether.

  1. People with low blood pressure (Hypotension)
Amla can help lower blood pressure. If yours is already low, too much amla may cause dizziness, weakness, or fainting.
  2. Those with a very sensitive stomach or gastritis
Amla is highly acidic. In people prone to acidity, gastritis, or stomach pain, it can worsen burning, bloating, or nausea—especially on an empty stomach.
  3. People suffering from chronic diarrhea or IBS-D
Amla has a mild laxative effect. Excess intake can increase bowel movements and aggravate loose stools.
  4. Patients taking blood-thinning medicines
Amla may enhance the blood-thinning effect. This can increase the risk of bleeding if you’re on medications like aspirin or anticoagulants.
  5. People with kidney problems
Amla is rich in vitamin C. In large amounts, this may contribute to oxalate formation, which can stress the kidneys or worsen kidney stone risk.
  6. Those with iron overload (high iron levels)
Amla boosts iron absorption. If you already have excess iron (like in hemochromatosis), it may raise levels further.
  7. People with very dry skin or joint dryness in winter
Excessive amla intake may increase dryness in some body types, worsening dry skin, cracking joints, or stiffness during cold weather.
  8. Pregnant women (without medical advice)
While small food amounts are usually safe, medicinal doses of amla juice, powders, or supplements should be avoided unless approved by a doctor.

Safe tip

  • Limit amla to 1 fresh fruit or 10–15 ml juice per day
  • Avoid taking it empty stomach if you have acidity
  • Do not combine with multiple supplements daily
