Physical Inactivity Linked to Higher Heart Failure Risk in Diabetes, Study of 2.3 Million Reveals

A large global study involving over 2.3 million adults with diabetes has found that physical inactivity plays a major role in serious complications—especially heart failure.

Key findings from the study

  • Researchers analysed data pooled from 27 international health studies covering about 2.3–2.4 million people with diabetes.
  • Physical inactivity was defined as less than 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week.
  • The results showed inactivity contributed to:
    • 7.3% of heart failure cases globally.
    • Over 10% of strokes in diabetics.
    • Around 5–7% of heart disease cases.
  • In India, the impact was even higher:
    • More than 13% of heart failure cases among diabetics were linked to inactivity.

Researchers said these findings show that many complications often considered “inevitable” in diabetes could actually be prevented with regular physical activity.

Why inactivity increases heart failure risk

When people with diabetes are inactive:

  • Blood sugar remains poorly controlled.
  • Fat accumulates around organs and arteries.
  • Blood vessels and heart muscle get damaged over time.

This combination increases the likelihood of:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure

What experts recommend

  • At least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week (such as brisk walking, cycling, or yoga).
  • Even small increases in activity can reduce complications and hospitalisations.
