If you are strictly cutting salt from your diet, your body may start showing warning signs. Sodium is an essential mineral that helps maintain fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle activity. When intake drops too low, the body struggles to maintain normal functioning.
Low sodium levels can lead to fatigue, because cells don’t get proper fluid balance and energy transmission slows down. You may feel weak, drained, or unable to focus even after resting.
Dizziness is another common sign. Sodium helps regulate blood pressure, and when levels fall, blood pressure can drop, causing lightheadedness, especially when standing up.
Headaches can occur because low sodium disturbs fluid levels in the brain, leading to pressure changes that trigger pain.
Other possible symptoms include nausea, muscle cramps, confusion, and in severe cases, fainting. This condition is often called low sodium or hyponatremia, and it can happen if you drink excess water, sweat heavily, or follow a very low-salt diet.
Salt should not be eliminated completely. The key is moderation, not restriction. A balanced diet with normal home-cooked food usually provides safe sodium levels without increasing health risks.
