According to Ayurveda, the body’s three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are influenced by seasonal changes. Eating according to the season is believed to help maintain balance and support overall health.
Summer (Grishma Ritu): Pitta Tends to Increase
The hot weather can aggravate the Pitta dosha, which is associated with heat and metabolism. Ayurveda recommends eating cooling, hydrating foods such as cucumber, watermelon, coconut water, mint, leafy vegetables, and seasonal fruits. It also advises limiting very spicy, oily, fried, and excessively sour foods, as they may further increase body heat.
Winter (Hemant/Shishir Ritu): Vata Tends to Increase
Cold, dry weather can increase the Vata dosha, which is linked to movement and dryness. To balance Vata, Ayurveda suggests warm, freshly cooked meals, soups, whole grains, ghee, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats. Drinking warm water and herbal teas and avoiding excessive cold or raw foods may also help.
While these recommendations are rooted in traditional Ayurvedic principles, they are not universally supported by modern scientific evidence. Individual health needs vary, so people with medical conditions or specific dietary requirements should consult a qualified healthcare professional or an Ayurvedic practitioner before making significant dietary changes.
