What to Do If Someone Suddenly Faints or Has a Heart Attack

Knowing a few basic first-aid steps can help you respond quickly in an emergency. The most important thing is to stay calm, check whether the person is responsive and breathing, and get emergency medical help immediately when needed.

1. If Someone Suddenly Faints

First, make sure the area is safe. Do not crowd the person or try to make them stand up immediately.

Lay the person flat on their back and, if there is no suspected injury, raise their legs slightly. Loosen tight clothing and allow fresh air.

Check their breathing and responsiveness. If they don’t wake up quickly, are not breathing normally, or you are unsure about their condition, call emergency medical services immediately.

Do not give food, water, medicine, or anything by mouth while the person is unconscious, because they could choke.

If they regain consciousness, let them remain lying down and get medical help if the fainting was unexplained, repeated, or accompanied by chest pain, severe headache, difficulty breathing, injury, seizure, or other concerning symptoms.

2. If Someone May Be Having a Heart Attack

Possible warning signs include pressure or pain in the chest, pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or unusual weakness. Symptoms can vary, especially in women and older adults.

Call emergency medical services immediately. Don’t wait to see whether the symptoms disappear.

Have the person sit and rest in a comfortable position and keep them calm. Avoid making them walk around or drive themselves to the hospital.

If they have a prescribed emergency medicine such as nitroglycerin, help them take it according to their existing medical instructions.

Aspirin should only be considered when appropriate and according to emergency-medical guidance, because it can be dangerous for people with certain allergies, bleeding problems, or other conditions.

3. If They Become Unresponsive

Check whether they are breathing normally.

If they are not breathing normally or are only gasping, call emergency services and begin CPR immediately. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest, and use an AED (automated external defibrillator) if one is available. Follow the AED’s spoken instructions.

If the person is unconscious but breathing normally, place them in the recovery position if there is no suspected spinal injury and continue monitoring their breathing until help arrives.

Remember: Check → Call → CPR/AED if needed

In India, 112 is the national emergency number. In a suspected heart attack or unexplained loss of consciousness, getting professional emergency help quickly is more important than trying home remedie
