Brain Death: How One Life Can Give New Hope to Others

Brain Death: Does It Mean the End of Life?

Brain death means the complete and irreversible loss of all brain and brainstem functions. It is medically and legally considered death, even if machines can temporarily keep the heart beating and the body functioning.

However, in some cases, a person who has died from brain death may become an organ donor. With the family’s consent and medical suitability, organs such as the heart, kidneys, liver, lungs and pancreas can be transplanted into patients who urgently need them.

How can one life help others?

  • ❤️ Heart: Can give a patient with severe heart disease a chance to live.
  • 🫁 Lungs: May help someone with irreversible lung failure.
  • 🫘 Kidneys: Can help patients with kidney failure avoid or reduce dependence on dialysis.
  • 🧡 Liver: Can save someone suffering from serious liver disease.
  • 👁️ Corneas: Can restore sight in eligible recipients.
  • 🩺 Tissues: Certain tissues can also help improve another person’s quality of life.

Important: Organ donation does not mean the donor can be revived. Brain death is irreversible. The possibility of donation allows organs that are still functioning because of medical support to potentially save or improve the lives of others.
