Common harmless reasons
- Tight socks – Elastic bands press on the skin and leave temporary marks
- Long sitting or standing – Fluid collects in feet causing mild swelling
- Dehydration – Skin becomes more prone to pressure marks
These marks usually fade within a few minutes.
Warning signs you shouldn’t ignore
If the marks are deep, dark, or last long, it may indicate:
- Poor blood circulation
Blood isn’t flowing properly, often seen in people who sit for long hours. - Water retention (Edema)
Swelling in feet due to excess fluid — common in kidney, heart, or liver issues. - High salt intake
Too much sodium causes fluid buildup in legs and feet. - Varicose veins
Weak veins cause pressure and sock marks that stay longer. - Early diabetes or thyroid problems
These conditions can cause swelling and slow circulation.
When to worry
Take it seriously if:
- Marks stay more than 10–15 minutes
- Feet look swollen

- It happens daily
- Skin turns very dark or shiny
What you should do
