“He’ll start speaking on his own as he grows up…” – Doctor warns that delaying action on speech delays in children can be a mistake parents should avoid.

Speech delay means a child is not developing speech and language skills at the expected age. While some children are naturally late talkers, assuming that a child will “start speaking on their own” without evaluation can delay the diagnosis and treatment of underlying issues. Doctors advise parents to seek professional help if they notice persistent delays, as early intervention often leads to better outcomes.

Common causes of speech delay include hearing problems, autism spectrum disorder, developmental disorders, neurological conditions, or limited language interaction at home. Warning signs include not babbling by 12 months, not saying single words by 16 months, not using two-word phrases by 24 months, or having difficulty understanding simple instructions.

Parents should avoid waiting too long or comparing their child with others. Instead, they should talk, read, sing, and play with their child every day, limit excessive screen time, and consult a pediatrician or speech-language therapist if they have concerns. Early assessment does not necessarily mean something is seriously wrong, but it helps ensure the child receives support as early as possible if needed.
