How Picky Eating Can Affect a Child’s Growth
Many children are fussy about food—refusing vegetables, eating only a few favourite foods, or constantly saying “I don’t want it.” While picky eating can be a normal phase, very limited eating over a long period can affect a child’s nutrition and growth.
- Slower growth – Not getting enough calories and nutrients may affect healthy weight and height gain.
- Protein deficiency – Avoiding foods like milk, eggs, pulses and other protein-rich foods can affect muscle and tissue development.
- Iron deficiency – A limited diet may increase the risk of low iron, which can contribute to tiredness, weakness and poor concentration.
- Vitamin and mineral deficiencies – Avoiding fruits, vegetables and other food groups can lead to gaps in nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, zinc and vitamin A.
- Weaker immunity – A balanced diet provides nutrients needed to support the immune system and overall health.
- Brain and learning development – Adequate nutrition is important for brain development, concentration, learning and daily energy.
What can parents do? Avoid forcing the child to eat. Instead, offer small portions of different healthy foods repeatedly and keep mealtimes relaxed. If a child eats an extremely limited range of foods or their weight or height is not progressing normally, consult a pediatrician or dietitian.
