The XEC variant of COVID-19 is a newly emerging strain, first identified in Germany in June 2024. It has since spread across Europe, including the UK, and may become dominant as colder weather increases transmission. XEC is a recombinant variant, meaning it combines elements from two previous strains (KS.1.1 and KP.3.3).
Symptoms of XEC are similar to other COVID variants, including fever, cough, headaches, sore throat, body aches, and loss of taste or smell. More severe symptoms, such as shortness of breath, can occur, especially in vulnerable individuals. Like earlier variants, it primarily causes respiratory symptoms, though the severity of illness may vary depending on individual health and vaccination status.
Scientists are keeping a close watch on its spread and potential impact, as it could surpass the KP.3.1.1 strain, currently one of the most infectious variants. However, existing vaccines, particularly boosters, are expected to offer significant protection against severe illness from XEC(
