5 Signs of Liver Damage That Show Up on the Skin

When the liver is not working properly, it often shows warning signs on your skin. Many people mistake them for normal skin problems, but ignoring them can be dangerous. Here are five key signs:

1. Yellowing of Skin and Eyes (Jaundice)

When the liver cannot remove bilirubin from the blood, it builds up and turns the skin and eyes yellow. This is one of the most common signs of serious liver issues.

2. Itchy Skin Without Any Rash

Liver damage can cause bile salts to accumulate under the skin, leading to constant itching—especially at night. There may be no visible rash, which makes people ignore it.

3. Easy Bruising on the Skin

The liver helps produce proteins that are needed for blood clotting. When it is damaged, your skin may bruise easily even from small bumps.

4. Spider-Like Blood Vessels (Spider Angiomas)

Tiny, red, spider-shaped blood vessels may appear on the face, chest, or arms. These happen due to hormonal imbalance caused by liver dysfunction.

5. Swelling in Legs or Abdomen

Liver damage can lead to fluid buildup in the body. This causes swelling—especially in the legs (edema) and stomach area (ascites). The skin may look stretched or tight.

If you notice these symptoms, it’s important to get a medical check-up early. Early detection can prevent severe liver disease.
