Breast Cancer: No Lump Doesn’t Always Mean No Cancer — Watch for These 7 Warning Signs

Breast cancer is often associated with a noticeable lump, but a lump may not always be the first or only sign. Some changes can be subtle, so paying attention to unusual changes in your breasts can help with early detection.

  1. Change in breast size or shape
If one breast suddenly looks different in size or shape without an obvious reason, it should not be ignored.
  2. Skin changes on the breast
Dimpling, puckering, thickening, redness or skin that looks like an orange peel can sometimes be a warning sign.
  3. Nipple changes
A newly inverted nipple, unusual swelling or a change in the appearance of the nipple may need medical evaluation.
  4. Unusual nipple discharge
Discharge, particularly bloody or clear discharge that occurs without squeezing the nipple, should be checked by a doctor.
  5. Persistent breast pain
Breast pain is usually caused by conditions other than cancer, but persistent or unusual pain in one particular area should be evaluated.
  6. Swelling or changes around the armpit
Swelling or a lump in the armpit or near the collarbone can sometimes occur when breast cancer affects nearby lymph nodes.
  7. Sudden changes that don’t go away
Any new breast or nipple change that persists—even without a lump—deserves attention and, when appropriate, a clinical examination.

Important: These signs do not automatically mean breast cancer. Many can have harmless causes. But if you notice a new or persistent change, consult a healthcare professional rather than waiting for a lump to appear.
