People with diabetes and high blood pressure need to take extra precautions while fasting during Navratri. Prolonged fasting and inadequate fluid intake can affect blood sugar and blood pressure. Dehydration may also put extra strain on the kidneys.
1. Consult Your Doctor Before Fasting
People with diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease should consult their doctor before fasting. The advice will depend on their health condition and medications.
2. Monitor Your Blood Sugar Regularly
Blood sugar levels may become too low or too high during fasting. Do not ignore symptoms such as dizziness, sweating, weakness, or excessive thirst.
3. Stay Hydrated
If your fast allows water, drink enough fluids throughout the day. Dehydration can affect kidney function. However, people with kidney or heart conditions who have been advised to restrict fluids should follow their doctor’s instructions.
4. Never Stop Your Medicines on Your Own
Do not stop or change the dosage or timing of diabetes and blood pressure medications without medical advice. Your doctor can adjust your treatment schedule according to your fasting routine.
5. Choose Balanced Foods for Fasting
Instead of relying only on potatoes, sabudana, sweets, and fried foods, choose nutritious options such as suitable fruits, vegetables, and curd. People with diabetes should also monitor their carbohydrate intake.
6. Break Your Fast If You Develop Warning Symptoms
Severe dizziness, fainting, confusion, extreme weakness, or dangerously low or high blood sugar may require you to stop fasting and seek medical help promptly.
7. Get Your Kidneys Checked Regularly
Diabetes and high blood pressure can gradually damage the kidneys. Follow your doctor’s advice regarding blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar tests, kidney function tests, and urine protein tests.
Important Note: Religious fasting should not come at the cost of your health. If fasting could worsen your condition, consult your doctor and prioritize your medical needs.
