Postpartum Depression: Don’t Ignore These Symptoms After Delivery

After giving birth, women experience several physical and emotional changes. While feeling tired is normal, persistent sadness, anxiety, and loss of interest in daily activities may be signs of postpartum depression.

1. Persistent Sadness If a woman feels sad most of the time, cries frequently, or experiences hopelessness after delivery, these symptoms should not be dismissed as ordinary tiredness.

2. Difficulty Bonding with the Baby Some women may find it difficult to develop an emotional connection with their baby. This does not make them bad mothers; they may need emotional support and proper treatment.

3. Changes in Sleep and Appetite Sleep disturbances and changes in appetite can be signs of postpartum depression, especially when they continue even when the mother has an opportunity to rest.

4. Constant Anxiety and Irritability Excessive worry, restlessness, unexplained anger, or persistent fear about the baby’s safety may indicate postpartum depression or anxiety.

5. Feelings of Guilt or Worthlessness Repeatedly feeling like a bad mother, blaming oneself, or believing that one is failing can be warning signs that require attention.

6. Loss of Interest in Daily Activities If a woman loses interest in activities she previously enjoyed or begins withdrawing from family and friends, she should seek professional advice.

7. When Should You Seek Medical Help? If symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with caring for herself or her baby, she should consult a gynaecologist or mental health professional. If she has thoughts of harming herself or her baby, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Important: The baby blues usually improve within about two weeks after delivery, whereas postpartum depression can be more severe and may require treatment. It is not a sign of weakness, and recovery is possible with appropriate care and support.
