Spending hours looking at mobile phones, laptops, or computers can lead to neck stiffness, muscle tension, and discomfort. Poor posture and keeping your head bent forward for long periods can put extra strain on your neck muscles. These simple 5-minute stretching exercises may help relax the muscles and improve neck mobility.
1. Neck Tilts
Gently tilt your head toward your right shoulder without raising your shoulder. Hold for 10–15 seconds, then repeat on the left side.
Benefits: Helps stretch the muscles along the sides of the neck and may reduce stiffness.
2. Chin Tucks
Sit upright and look straight ahead. Slowly draw your chin backward, as if making a double chin, without tilting your head up or down. Hold for 3–5 seconds and repeat 8–10 times.
Benefits: Encourages better head posture and helps activate the deep neck muscles.
3. Slow Neck Turns
Slowly turn your head to the right until you feel a gentle stretch. Hold for 5 seconds, return to the center, and repeat on the left side. Perform 5 repetitions on each side.
Benefits: Helps maintain comfortable neck movement and reduce stiffness from prolonged sitting.
4. Shoulder Rolls
Raise your shoulders gently, roll them backward in a circular motion, and relax them down. Repeat 10 times, then roll them forward 10 times.
Benefits: Relieves tension around the shoulders and upper back, which often accompanies neck discomfort.
5. Upper Trapezius Stretch
Sit upright and gently tilt your right ear toward your right shoulder. Keep your left shoulder relaxed and down. Hold for 15–20 seconds, then switch sides.
Benefits: Stretches the upper trapezius muscles, which can become tight after prolonged screen use.
Tips to Prevent Neck Stiffness
- Keep your screen at approximately eye level.
- Maintain a comfortable, upright sitting posture.
- Take a short movement break every 30–60 minutes.
- Avoid holding your phone too low for long periods.
- Stay physically active and change positions regularly.
Important: Perform all stretches slowly and gently. Do not force your neck or make sudden circular movements. Stop if you experience pain, dizziness, tingling, or numbness. Seek medical advice if the stiffness persists, worsens, or follows an injury.
Remember: Just five minutes of gentle movement can be a useful part of your daily screen-time routine, but it may not provide immediate relief for everyone.
