Direct Link Between Air Pollution and Cancer: How PM2.5 Increases Lung Cancer Risk
There is a well-established link between long-term exposure to air pollution and lung cancer. PM2.5 refers to extremely fine particles measuring 2.5 micrometres or less. Because these particles are so small, they can travel deep into the lungs and, in some cases, enter the bloodstream.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies outdoor air pollution and particulate matter as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). Long-term exposure to PM2.5 has been consistently associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.
How does PM2.5 contribute to cancer?
When PM2.5 enters the lungs repeatedly over a long period, it can contribute to chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and cellular damage. These processes can create conditions that favour abnormal cell growth and, eventually, cancer.
Recent evidence summarized by WHO/IARC estimates that lung-cancer mortality risk increases by about 9% for every 10 µg/m³ increase in long-term PM2.5 exposure.
Can avoiding PM2.5 prevent lung cancer?
Reducing exposure can lower risk, but it cannot guarantee that lung cancer will be prevented. Smoking remains the largest preventable cause of lung cancer, while air pollution is another important risk factor.
Practical ways to reduce PM2.5 exposure include:
- Check the local AQI before spending long periods outdoors.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor exercise when pollution levels are high.
- Keep windows closed during severe pollution episodes when appropriate.
- Use a properly fitted N95/KN95-type respirator when high outdoor pollution cannot be avoided.
- Reduce indoor sources of fine particles, such as tobacco smoke, biomass burning and unnecessary burning.
- Support cleaner transportation and better air-quality measures in the community.
Bottom line: PM2.5 is not just a respiratory irritant—it is a recognized carcinogenic component of air pollution. Reducing long-term exposure is an important part of lung-cancer prevention, alongside avoiding tobacco smoke and other known carcinogens.
