Many people reach for a glass of cold coffee on a hot day, assuming it helps cool the body. While it may provide an instant feeling of refreshment, the reality is more complicated.
Cold coffee can temporarily make you feel cooler because of its chilled temperature. However, the caffeine it contains acts as a mild stimulant and may increase heart rate and metabolism, which can slightly raise internal body heat. Caffeine can also have a mild diuretic effect, potentially contributing to dehydration if consumed in excess.
According to dietitians, cold coffee is fine in moderation, but it should not be relied upon as a hydration drink during extreme heat. Water, coconut water, buttermilk, lemon water, and other electrolyte-rich beverages are much better choices for keeping the body cool and hydrated.
Bottom line: Cold coffee may feel refreshing for a short time, but it doesn’t necessarily cool your body from within. Staying properly hydrated with water and natural cooling drinks is a more effective way to beat the heat.
