Screen Addiction Is Increasing Myopia in Children: How Parents Can Protect Their Child’s Eyes

1. Limit Screen Time

Excessive use of smartphones, tablets, and computers forces children’s eyes to focus on nearby objects for long periods, increasing the risk of myopia. Set age-appropriate screen time limits and encourage regular breaks.

2. Encourage Outdoor Play

Spending at least 1.5–2 hours outdoors daily exposes children to natural sunlight, which supports healthy eye development and may help slow the progression of myopia.

3. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

Teach children to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes of near work. This simple habit helps reduce eye strain and relaxes the eye muscles.

4. Maintain a Healthy Reading Distance

Children should keep books and digital screens at least 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) away from their eyes. Reading while lying down or using devices too close to the face should be avoided.

5. Ensure Proper Lighting

Poor lighting can increase eye fatigue. Make sure children study or use screens in a well-lit room, and avoid using digital devices in complete darkness.

6. Schedule Regular Eye Check-ups

Routine eye examinations can detect myopia early, even before children complain of blurry vision. Early diagnosis allows timely treatment and helps prevent worsening eyesight.

Note: If your child frequently squints, sits very close to the TV, complains of headaches, or has difficulty seeing the classroom board, consult an eye specialist promptly. Early intervention can help manage myopia effectively.
