Screen Time and Children’s Spine: 7 Habits for a Healthy Digital Detox

Long hours of phone, tablet, computer or gaming use can encourage children to sit in poor positions for prolonged periods. Instead of completely banning screens, parents can teach simple habits that protect posture and encourage regular movement.

  1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule
After every 20 minutes of screen use, encourage children to look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It also gives them a natural reminder to change position.
  2. Keep the screen at eye level
Children often bend their necks while looking down at phones or tablets. Keep the screen closer to eye level and encourage them to sit upright.
  3. Take movement breaks
Encourage children to get up, walk around, stretch or play for a few minutes after extended screen sessions. Frequent movement is better than sitting continuously for long periods.
  4. Avoid using phones while lying down
Using a phone in bed or while lying on the stomach can place the neck and back in awkward positions. Encourage children to use screens while sitting comfortably with proper support.
  5. Make meals and family time screen-free
Keep certain parts of the day completely free from digital devices. This reduces unnecessary screen exposure and encourages conversation and physical activity.
  6. Create an active after-school routine
Balance screen time with outdoor games, cycling, walking, sports or other physical activities. Children need regular movement as part of a healthy daily routine.
  7. Parents should model healthy habits
Children often copy adults. If parents also take screen breaks, maintain good posture and keep phones away during family time, children are more likely to follow the same habits.

Remember: Digital detox does not necessarily mean eliminating screens completely. The goal is to build a healthier balance between screen use, good posture, sleep and physical activity.
