If you wake up feeling stiff or sore even after sleeping 7–8 hours, your sleeping position may be putting strain on your muscles and joints all night.
How sleeping position causes stiffness:
- Sleeping on stomach → twists neck and lower back, causing morning pain.
- Too many / too few pillows → misaligns spine and neck.
- Curling tightly (fetal position) → tight hips, shoulders, and back.
- Sleeping on very soft mattress → body sinks, spine bends unnaturally.
- Not moving during sleep → muscles stay in one position for hours.
Best positions doctors recommend:
- On your back with a pillow under knees → keeps spine neutral
- On your side with pillow between knees → reduces hip & back strain
Quick fixes:
- Use a medium-firm mattress
- Keep pillow height aligned with neck
- Stretch lightly after waking
- Avoid sleeping on your stomach
If stiffness lasts more than 1–2 weeks, it could also be due to vitamin deficiency, poor posture, or muscle inflammation.
