Breast Self-Examination: A Simple 5-Minute Guide

Performing a breast self-examination (BSE) can help you become familiar with the normal appearance and feel of your breasts. It takes only about five minutes and can help you notice unusual changes.

1. Choose the Right Time

The breasts are often less tender and swollen a few days after menstruation. If you have periods, choose a consistent time, such as three days after your period ends.

2. Check in Front of a Mirror

Stand straight with your shoulders relaxed and look for changes in breast size, shape, or skin texture. Notice any dimpling, redness, swelling, or changes in the nipples.

3. Raise Your Arms

Lift both arms above your head and check your breasts again. Look for unusual changes in their shape, skin, or nipples.

4. Feel Your Breasts Gently

Using the pads of your three middle fingers, move in small circular motions over the entire breast, including the area toward the armpit. Apply light, medium, and firm pressure to feel different depths.

5. Check for Unusual Changes

Look for a new lump, thickening, persistent pain, nipple discharge (especially bloody discharge), or a nipple that suddenly turns inward.

Important Things to Remember

  • If you notice a new or unusual change, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
  • Most breast lumps are not cancerous, but a new lump should be evaluated.
  • Breast self-examination does not replace recommended breast screening or a clinical examination. Evidence has not shown that routine self-examination alone reduces breast cancer deaths.

The key message: Know what is normal for your breasts, notice changes, and seek medical advice if something seems unusual.
